Our history

Trail Side Deli has a story of its own. LaVern and Lou Miller own it, and we are from Millersburg, Ohio. As a shy young man in his twenties, LaVern worked at The True Value Hardware in Millersburg, owned at the time by his Uncle and, in more recent years, owned by Ace Hardware. LaVern enjoyed working in retail, and Lou enjoyed cooking and baking. Thus the idea of a grocery/deli store was excellent for both of us.

Trail Side Deli began after we had done ten months of mission work. During that time, our camper, which we pulled with our truck, became our home while we traveled around doing behind-the-scenes jobs at different missions. LaVern was installing ceramic tile at the time. Over about two years, after returning to Holmes County, we looked and prayed and finally found the little spot in downtown Millersburg that became the beginning of Trail Side Deli. God led us there, for we had been looking in Wooster and Medina, totally missing the little place in our hometown.

After much work and many late nights, we finally opened our little shop on April 10, 2014. Believe us when we say “little.” You entered the door and walked the one aisle to the deli and down the other to the cash, which was the store’s extent. That tiny little store was a huge learning experience for us, and we have many fond memories of our time there. It gave us courage for our next step of the journey. It took a little while to build a steady customer base, but people started coming, and word of mouth was a huge help to our business. Our customers seemed to REALLY like it and loved that we were in Millersburg. So we kept chipping away at it and adding more and more products. By the time we moved to our new location, we had those shelves full and overflowing.

In the summer/fall of 2014, the Family Dollar Store across the street closed its doors, leaving a vacant building. Little did we know what would take its place until one day, Martin Mann, now deceased and missed by many, who owned part of the building, came in to chat with us. He came to tell us that he’s giving us an opportunity to move our store into the old Family Dollar. What a shock this was to us! One of our goals with this store is that, eventually, it can support us to do more mission work as a family. There really wasn’t much of a future in the little store because there wasn’t room to expand. So with the offer of moving into this more prominent building, we were quite excited, yet it felt very daunting. It looked pretty big for our business, which was still in the baby stage. Again with much prayer, we felt this was God opening the doors for us and taking us places we never dreamed of. It just shows that His thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not ours. His ways are always the BEST.

With confirmation that this was God’s Will, we took the step and moved ahead. With lots of help from family and friends, bless them, we worked and worked for many months to get this new location ready. Painting, building things, putting old barn beams up, cleaning the floor, and lots of planning. It finally came together. We got to open the new doors on May 22, 2015. It was a very happy day, and we were very relieved to have the BIG move behind us.

Again people came, and they fell in love with this new location and all the things we could offer that we couldn’t offer before. Further additions were the gift/flower shop, a sitting area, a more significant variety of meats and cheeses, lots more bulk, a bigger freezer area, etc. God has richly blessed us with many wonderful customers, and we can offer so many more products; of course, a store like this can always use improvements, so we continue to work on that.

Our hearts are also very grateful to our Father in Heaven, who has led us to where we are e.v.e.r.y. single step of the way. Thank you, Jesus!

We love our customers and enjoy getting involved in the community. So please take some time to visit us. We will be happy to serve you in the best way possible. May the Lord be honored at Trail Side Deli.
